Stress is a struggle we all experience. However, if you’ve tried every method of relaxation under the sun and nothing has worked for your chronic stress, it’s time to try a different approach. Medical stress relief can be a useful tool in managing your stress, as the source of it in your brain is the release of stress hormones. Certain medications can quite literally work as “chill pills” and significantly reduce those symptoms that keep you up at night.


You’ve probably already heard of this prevalent type of medication, but have you ever thought of using it for stress? Antidepressants are most often used to treat depression; however, they can also treat symptoms of anxiety and stress. Because the brain releases the same stress hormones during an anxiety episode that it does during a stress episode, anti-anxiety medication could very well be what calms you and helps your symptoms.

Nutritional Supplements

Although they don’t sound like your regular medications, there are several naturally occurring substances that you can consume for stress management. Nutritional supplements include but are not limited to chamomile, Passionflower, and Motherwort, and are usually extracted from plants.

However, as with any medication, you should consult your physician before taking these supplements or combining them with any prescribed drugs so as not to make your symptoms worse or prevent your prescription medication from functioning correctly.

Sedative Medications

Medical drugs that have sedative properties work similarly to antidepressants, although not precisely in the same way. By producing GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, sedatives relax you and calm your central nervous system—even to the point of slowing your breathing and making you sleepy.

However, if taken in high doses, sedatives can be extremely dangerous and give you side effects such as slow reflexes and walking impairment. Sedative medications are also addictive and easier to overdose on than other forms of medical stress relief, so it is of the utmost importance that you only take the recommended dosage from your trained doctor.


Usually, this type of medication is prescribed for high blood pressure and heart problems, but some people experience a decrease in their stress symptoms. Beta-blockers primarily work to block the hormone norepinephrine, slowing down your heart rate. Common side effects include feeling tired, having cold hands and feet, and experiencing nightmares.

Bupropion (BuSpar)

If you have chronic stress, this might not be the best option for you; however, this medication is still a pretty effective solution to physical symptoms of stress and anxiety. Rather than helping you with your mood, BuSpar aims to decrease the external manifestation of your anxiety, such as fatigue, restlessness, racing heartbeat, and dizziness.

Unlike other forms of medical stress relief, BuSpar is not addictive, nor is it a sedative, however it does not provide fast relief for most patients. Another critical thing to note is that you should check with your doctor before combining this medication with other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, as certain combinations can be fatal.
