Breast Cancer Self Check

Breast cancer continues to be an immense risk for women all over the world. Did you know that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? This further highlights the importance of awareness of this issue. October is breast cancer awareness month, and our team at Fox Medical Centers is here to educate our patient on Breast Cancer Self Check exams.

Raising awareness for breast cancer is something we view as crucial at the Fox Medical Centers because it is important for women to understand the importance of becoming aware of the risks, symptoms, causes, and prevention. This can help to save the lives of countless people in the world.

The first step to keeping yourself aware and informed is to learn how to perform a Breast Cancer Self Check. Experts recommend that adult women perform a self-check at least once a month.  This exam can be done at home without any help or medical assistance. Here are the steps to take for a successful breast self-exam.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Step 1: Examine your breasts in the mirror with shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Make sure that your breasts are their usual size, shape, and color and that they are evenly shaped without any signs of visible swelling or distortion. Changes such as dimpling, bulging of the skin, redness, rashes, swelling, soreness, or a moved nipple need to be brought to the attention of your doctor as soon as possible.

Step 2: Raise your arms and look for the same changes from step 1.

Step 3: Look for signs of fluid from your nipples that can be yellow, blood, milky, or watery.

Step 4: Lay down and feel your breasts in a circular motion, using a firm and smooth touch. Make sure to keep your hands together and flat. Touch your entire breast from top to bottom and side to side. Start from your collarbone to the upper part of your abdomen, then from your armpit to your cleavage.

Step 5: Repeat the previous step but instead of laying down, feel your breasts as you are standing or sitting.

Such a simple exam like this has the potential of alerting you to any abnormalities that may be present. If you see or feel anything out of the ordinary during your self exam, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately.
