Blue skies and sunny beach days are right around the corner! While you might think most people simply diet and exercise their way to perfect summer bodies, you’d be surprised to know how many of those people are worrying about skin tags. If you suffer from this problem and are insecure about your skin tags, you’re not alone. Over three million people in the United States experience this issue, but the good news is that they are completely removable! Before we get into Skin Tag Removal, what exactly is a skin tag?
The Science of Skin Tags
A skin tag is essentially a small, hanging growth on the surface of your skin, usually benign and painless. The growths are made up of epidermis, fat cells, fibers and ducts, and nerve cells. Skin tags are the common name of this condition, but they are also known as acrochordon, cutaneous papilloma, fibroma molluscum, and more. While skin tags can pop up anywhere on your body, they tend to appear on the neck, eyelids, underarms, upper chest, under the breasts, and in the groin area.
You’re more likely to get a skin tag in wherever your skin creases and folds, however some people are more vulnerable to getting skin tags than others. The more folding skin you have, the more your skin is prone to having these growths. If you’re overweight or obese, you probably have excess skin, meaning you have a greater change of getting tags in those areas that overlap and fold over.
Most of the time, skin tags are harmless and completely benign, meaning that although they are technically growths, they are non-cancerous and do not pose serious risks to your health. However, if you notice that the skin is abnormal and that too many skin tags are appearing on your body, you should definitely seek help from a medical professional.
Skin Tag Removal
Although anyone can develop skin tags, studies suggest that your family members can pass down genes that make you more susceptible to tags. Thus, if your mom has had trouble with skin tags, chances are you will too. This is not something to fret over, though, because skin tag removal is quick and easy. Because skin tags tend to look unsightly and can become irritated if you rub against them, most people opt for removing them at a doctor’s office through one of three methods.
The first is through simply cutting the tag(s) off with special scissors after your physician numbs the area. This procedure removes the skin tag immediately. Another method is cryotherapy, which essentially freezes the skin tag by applying extremely cold liquid nitrogen, causing the tag to fall off ten to fourteen days afterwards.
However, many patients report irritation in the skin around the tag, so talk to your doctor more about this medical procedure. The third skin tag removal method is through burning, in which your physician will use an electrode to send an electric current into the growth so that it falls off. Once your skin tag is removed, it most likely won’t come back, but other tags can pop up on other areas of your body.
