Are Headaches and Migraines the Same?

This is a common question we get at our medical centers, but it’s a significant one. Headaches can appear very similar to migraines, so don’t worry if you tend to confuse the two. Knowing the difference is still crucial for your health so you can figure out what exactly is causing your head to feel such great discomfort.

While headaches tend to be a temporary pain in your forehead area, migraines are a more intense and long-lasting pain on the side of your head. Headaches are usually a symptom of an activity you performed or of an illness you have, while migraines are an illness on their own that can come with many different symptoms such as nausea and dizziness.

Causes of Headaches and Migraines

  • Stress, Stress, Stress! Even just reading that word can make anyone stressed out, let alone can the everyday pressures of life. Whether it’s work, school, bills, your personal life, or even traffic, there’s plenty of factors that can stress you out daily. Once your stress level rises, your body can produce tension headaches and, over time, migraines that can last for days.

More and more people realize how dangerous stress can be and how much it can affect you mentally and physically. It’s easier said than done but be kind to your body and mind by balancing your life as much as possible. Remember that taking breaks isn’t just OK, but it’s necessary.

  • Caffeine Compulsion If you feel an irresistible urge to drink four cups of coffee a day, then you might have a dependency on caffeine. Your body can become addicted to many substances, and caffeine is no exception. While caffeine is found in a variety of medications for headaches because it can help you with the pain, it can also be the source of your headaches if not taken in moderation.

Having several cups of anything besides water throughout the day is seldom good, so try to limit your caffeine intake and keep it to a minimum so that your body does not become dependent on it and give you headaches if you forget to drink coffee in the morning. If your body is already addicted to caffeine, then cutting back on it suddenly may cause you to withdrawal and give you an even bigger headache, so consult your doctor to find out how you can fix this problem.   • Hair-Raising Hairstyles Tight ponytails, hats, braids, headbands, and many other hairstyles can physically hurt your scalp’s connective tissue, giving you a headache. Taking off the hairstyle that’s causing you pain is a fast way to give you headache relief, but over time if you continue to use these hairstyles regularly, your symptoms can get worse. Try to save your scalp as much as you can by letting your hair down and not leaving these hairstyles on for too long at a time.
  • Hunger Headaches Repeat after me: Skipping a meal is not ideal! Headaches can be a symptom of low blood sugar if you’re not eating enough. However, just because your body isn’t getting enough glucose, doesn’t mean you should eat foods high in processed sugar. Instead, opt for things like fruit or dairy.
  • Poor Posture Having lousy posture doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t sit up straight. While hunching your shoulders can be a big part of the problem, sitting down for long periods with little to no back support can also build up tension in your muscles. This can in turn cause headaches, so make sure your chairs are properly cushioned, you take breaks from sitting down at the office, and that you sit up straight as much as you can.
